The Swedish VA industry faces huge investments to meet these requirements and at the same time ensure the availability of clean water for future generations. According to Pär, it will require over SEK 1,200 billion to replace and renew Sweden’s water infrastructure, which currently has a renewal rate of 200 years. In order to cope with this, not only funds are required, but also a clearer connection between environmental legislation and society’s protection legislation, something that the current water services act cannot fully solve.
